Removable Dyes—The Missing Link for In-Depth N-glycan Analysis via Multi-Method Approaches

Samanta Cajic,René Hennig,Valerian Grote,Udo Reichl,Erdmann Rapp,

Engineering doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2023.02.016

Abstract: As the roles of glycans in health and disease continue to be unraveled, it is becoming apparent that glycans’ immense complexity cannot be ignored. To fully delineate glycan structures, we developed an integrative approach combining a set of cost-effective, widespread, and easy-to-handle analytical methods. The key feature of our workflow is the exploitation of a removable fluorescent label—exemplified by 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (Fmoc)—to bridge the gap between diverse glycoanalytical methods, especially multiplexed capillary gel electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence detection (xCGE-LIF) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). Through the detailed structural analysis of selected, dauntingly complex N-glycans from chicken ovalbumin, horse serum, and bovine transferrin, we illustrate the capabilities of the presented strategy. Moreover, this approach “visualizes” N-glycans that have been difficult to identify thus far—such as the sulfated glycans on human immunoglobulin A—including minute changes in glycan structures, potentially providing useful new targets for biomarker discovery.

Function-reversible facets enabling SrTiO nanocrystals for improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Frontiers in Energy doi: 10.1007/s11708-023-0894-4

Abstract: It has been widely reported that, for faceted nanocrystals, the two adjacent facets with different band levels contribute to promoted charge separation, and provide active sites for photocatalytic reduction and oxidation reaction, respectively. In such cases, only one family of facets can be used for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Herein, by using SrTiO3 nanocrystals enclosed by {023} and {001} facets as a model photocatalyst, this paper proposed a strategy to achieve the full-facets-utilization of the nanocrystals for photocatalytic hydrogen via chemically depositing Pt nanoparticles on all facets. The photo-deposition experiment of CdS provided direct evidence to demonstrate that the {023} facets which were responsible for photooxidation reaction can be function-reversed for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution after depositing Pt nanoparticles, together with the {001} facets. Thus, the full-facets-utilization led to a much-improved activity for photocatalytic hydrogen, in contrast to those SrTiO3 nanocrystals with only {001} facets deposited by Pt nanoparticles via a photo-deposition method.

Abstract: In the field of (RDH), designing a high-precision predictor to reduce the embedding distortion and developing an effective embedding strategy to minimize the distortion caused by embedding information are the two most critical aspects. In this paper, we propose a new RDH method, including a predictor based on a and a novel embedding strategy with multiple embedding rules. In the predictor part, we first design a -based predictor. Then, we propose an image division method to divide the image into four parts, which can use more pixels as context. Compared with other predictors, the -based predictor can extend the range of pixels for prediction from neighboring pixels to global ones, making it more accurate in reducing the embedding distortion. In the embedding strategy part, we first propose a complexity measurement with pixels in the target blocks. Then, we develop an improved prediction error ordering rule. Finally, we provide an embedding strategy including multiple embedding rules for the first time. The proposed RDH method can effectively reduce the distortion and provide satisfactory results in improving the visual quality of data-hidden images, and experimental results show that the performance of our RDH method is leading the field.
